American Cockroaches

What American cockroaches look like

The American cockroach is the largest species of roach that can invade homes, reaching over two inches in length. These pests are typically reddish-brown, with a distinct yellowish figure-eight pattern on the back of their heads. While they have wings and can fly short distances, they often rely on their six legs to get around. Like all roaches, they are oval-shaped and have long antennae.

Where you'll find these roaches

American cockroaches primarily thrive outdoors, but they can easily invade indoor spaces. They prefer warm, moist, or humid environments but can also survive in drier areas as long as they have access to water. Common hiding spots include kitchens, basements, crawl spaces, and even sewers. Unfortunately, these pests often traverse unsanitary areas, including feces and debris in sewers, before making their way into homes and businesses in New Jersey.

The health risks associated with American Cockroaches

According to Rutgers University, roaches can contaminate food and spread pathogens causing long-term economic and public health costs. Distributed worldwide they are often found in homes, restaurants, ships, trains, aircrafts, hospitals, spreading to pretty much any indoor area. Given what we just discussed, it should not come as a surprise that American roaches are filthy pests that are capable of spreading multiple strands of bacteria including salmonella and E.coli. Both types of bacteria have been associated with outbreaks that have resulted in food poisoning.

American roaches, or more specifically, the proteins in their saliva, urine and feces may triggers allergies and asthma attacks. Children are especially susceptible.

German Cockroaches

What German cockroaches look like

German cockroaches are smaller than American roaches, growing up to 5/8 of an inch in length. They are light brown to tan and can be identified by two nearly parallel dark stripes on their backs. Like their larger counterparts, German roaches have six legs, are oval-shaped, and feature long antennae. While they have wings, these pests prefer to run rather than fly.

Where you'll find these roaches

German cockroaches are fond of warm, humid environments and are often found in kitchens and bathrooms as well as in areas where food and drinks are consumed or made. They are frequently encountered and/or reported in commercial facilities that have kitchens or where food is handled or prepared including, but not limited to restaurants, healthcare buildings, and food processing facilities.

German cockroaches pose serious health risks, as they can spread harmful bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli, and contribute to staphylococcus infections. In addition, these pests are capable of transmitting parasitic worms, and their allergens can trigger allergic reactions or worsen asthma attacks, particularly in children.

Brownbanded cockroaches prefer areas where temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit and conditions are drier. In kitchens and bathrooms, they often hide in upper cabinets, on shelves, or near ceilings. They're also known to lurk behind light switches, inside furniture, and within electronic devices. Unlike other roaches, brownbanded cockroaches tend to avoid water and bright light.

Cockroach prevention tips and tricks

To help eliminate the threat of cockroaches in your home or facility, we recommend following these essential cockroach prevention tips:

Seal off potential entry points

Prevent cockroach infestations by sealing any potential entry points. This includes fixing gaps around doors and windows, repairing cracks in exterior walls and the foundation, replacing torn window and door screens, and ensuring weatherstripping is in good condition

Clean, Declutter, Sanitize

It's clear that cleanliness is key to preventing cockroach infestations. Whether it's a residential or commercial space, it's essential to clean up crumbs and spills, wash dishes promptly, disinfect all surfaces, and regularly remove trash. Never leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight or let trash cans overflow—these can attract roaches quickly.

Eliminate moisture conditions

Repairing leaking pipes or appliances, using dehumidifiers, and addressing any moisture issues are also crucial steps in keeping roaches at bay. Cockroaches are attracted to damp environments, so reducing excess moisture is key to preventing an infestation.

Did we mention getting rid of clutter?

Don't make it easy for roaches to thrive in your home or facility. Decluttering helps eliminate potential hiding spots for roaches, as well as other insects and rodents. Keeping your space organized and tidy is essential in preventing infestations.
