Signs of a Rat Infestation in Your Yard

Before jumping into solutions, it’s crucial to confirm that you’re dealing with rats. Since rats are nocturnal, you might not always see them, but you’ll likely notice evidence of their activity.

  • Rat Droppings: Dark brown or black, about the size of a grain of rice, often found near food sources or nesting areas.
  • Gnaw Marks: Rats constantly chew on wood, plastic, and even metal to keep their teeth sharp. Check for bite marks on fences, garden furniture, and food containers.
  • Burrows: Norway rats (the most common outdoor species) dig burrows in soft soil, especially near buildings, sheds, or under dense vegetation.
  • Grease Marks: Rats have oily fur that leaves dark smudges along walls and fences where they frequently travel.
  • Scratching Noises: At night, you might hear scurrying sounds in bushes, under decks, or around compost bins.

If you notice these signs, it’s time to take action.

Typically, rats and mice feed on a variety of fruits; for example, oranges, avocados, peaches, lemons, and figs. They are also very fond of walnuts and almonds. So, it’s vital that all fallen fruit and nuts should be regulated removed, and discarded as soon as possible.

Smells and Odors that attract rats

Eliminate water sources when possible, rats require a constant water source and they tend to stay around these sources. It’s necessary to remove, cover, or repair any sources that provide a water source for these rodents. This includes swimming pools, leaky faucets, irrigation lines, water bowls for pets and other sources of standing water. It won't only benefit your rat control efforts but will help with mosquito control as well.

Set Outdoor traps for Rats

The most efficient way on control rats on or near your property is by using outdoor rat bait stations and many other methods of control. There are several different kinds of rat traps. Each type of trap uses a different method of catching a rat, but all can be effective. Consider the pros and cons of each trap type to select the best trap for your situation.

Any type of rodent station that uses bait (poison for rats) you need to be very careful about placement especially if you have pets, or children.

  • Snap Traps: Place snap traps in areas where you've noticed rat activity, such as along walls or near burrows. Bait them with peanut butter or dried fruit.

  • Live Traps: For a humane approach, use live traps to capture and relocate rats. Release them at least a mile away from your property in a suitable environment.

  • Natural Deterrents: Planting herbs like mint, oregano, and sage can repel rats due to their strong scents.

Snap Rat Traps

With the right bait and location setup, the traditional snap traps are still the most common and effective way of catching rats. Commonly used inside homes where the bait is not affected by weather, these could also be placed inside of the exterior rat bait boxes combined with bait. These rodents are primarily nut and seed eaters, so using a small amount of peanut butter or hazelnut spread works best. When temperatures drop outside, rodents tend to slow down and focus on building nests, so you can also lure them by using materials such as cotton balls, dental floss, yarn, or twine. Makee you use gloves while setting up – rodents can detect your scent on traps you’ve handled and can potentially deter them from reaching your trap.
